What is Startup Weekend Cambodia ?
Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. Cambodia is currently preparing its local edition, taking place in Phnom Penh for the third time, from November 22nd to November 24th. The event will be hosted at the Yellow Tower, located few blocks from the Japanese bridge.
Everyone is welcome to present their ideas and build startup teams, regardless of their field of intervention, meaning that any Startup project can be presented. The weekend will bring together people with different skillsets, for example software and web developers, graphic designers, business developers, and more….
Previous local editions welcomed hundreds of people eager to develop their projects, meet new people and learn form each other ! David and Michael, winners of Startup Weekend Cambodia 2011 and 2012 both shared their views on this unique experience, a real personal and professional enrichment in their opinions.
“I cannot begin to put a value on the lessons learned and contacts made. The weekend is a great way to learn how to recognize and quickly evaluate opportunities” said Michael. After he heard about Startup Weekend during local Nerd Night, Michael entered the challenge with a novel project, a mobile application featuring the 100 most common words in a language. This application would especially target students willing to learn the basics of a new language for example. About his victory, Michael said he was lucky to have many different skills represented in his team, allowing to achieve tasks very quickly. Today, he recommends to future participants to “talk to everyone, learn everything they can and stay on the lookout for anyone they may like to work with in the future“.
David entered the competition with Chibi, a mobile dating and chat services that helps users to make new friends. “For me, participating in Startup Weekend Cambodia gave me great experience in making presentations and pitching my idea. It also validated my idea and gave me the drive to go ahead and implement it.” Said David. He heard about Startup Weekend through a friend in first place, and decided to join the event to test his idea and potentially find a team to work on it. In David’s opinion, the key to winning is the quality delivered during the final pitch : “it’s all about the final presentation in front the jury” he said, insisting on the importance to be well prepared “The more you practice the better chance you have to win“.
